Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre is one of those books that I've heard about for years and that I've been meaning to read but never seemed to be able to find the time. Now that I've read it I am kicking myself for taking so long to do so.

Even though going into this book I pretty much knew the whole story from discussions I've read on the web and through other books so there wasn't much that was a surprise. Yet knowing the major plot points didn't take away my enjoyment of this novel. Especially since there were so many more minor plot points that were waiting to be discovered.

All of the main characters have their flaws and it is because of those flaws that they are so endearing. Their imperfections humanize them and allow them to withstand the test of time. As much as I loved the story there were some parts that seemed a little contrived and others that stretched credability and because of that I refrain from giving it a full 5 stars. Overall though I did enjoy following Jane around the English countryside, watching her fall in love with the brooding Mr Rochester and just living her life to best of her means. This is a story that will stay with me and one that I will recommend to others.

In Short: Jane Eyre was a very endearing character and I was glad that I finally made the time to sit down with her and hear her story.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I swear I am the only person who hates this novel. I threw it away half way though but fished it out of the trash since I had to read it for a class. I couldn't get past Mr. Rochester's horrid treatment of Jane not to mention the fact that Jane is weak willed and annoying. I much preferred the Gothic Romance of her sister's Wuthering Heights but now I like more light hearted social satire a la Jane Austen.
